If one didn’t have to put up with all the additional pain in the rectum [behind] of living in the greater environs of the City of Sails, Auckland, one also has to live with the seeming bureaucratic blindness of the ARC, Auckland Regional Council, who seem to overestimate their own intelligence, the blind leading the blind, and as it relates to Rugby and the 2011 World Cup, the ball-in-hand seems about to be dropped… again… as another axiomatically good idea stands at the precipice of EPIC FAIL!
What am I going on about? Let me explain…
In today’s [July 8th, 2010] New Zealand Herald, we are given the state of play for what was proposed to be an area of frivolity for Rugby World Cup 2011, located on Queens Wharf, turning it into, “Party Central.” It seemed that the Government, who were pushing this idea, and the ARC, were on the same page. Yes, it “seemed.” However, I am not sure if anyone knew that the ARC couldn’t read! Now, while this may all come together in the end and those with the biggest gun may actually use it, the talk is not presently positive, and if this direction proves critical, we again miss the mark!
This is not the ARC’s first and biggest over-estimation, with prior history looming large.
Everything was running smoothly in an audacious idea of constructing a new, purpose-built waterfront stadium, for the RWC 2011. Such an iconic idea and plan seemed excitingly definitive, particularly when one contemplates the likelihood of such an event ever motivating such a construction again in our tiny backwater. With thoughts of passing this onto future generations, enjoying this ourselves, dreaming of how this could put the country on worldwide display… iconic… all was looking good until it went before the ARC, where it was very swiftly given the good old heave-ho… End of Story!
I don’t know about you, but enough is enough.
If they are stuck-on-stupid, then we should respond to this S-O-S, and rescue them, before all we have to offer our visitors in 2011 is a postcard [as that's the best idea of a view we can agree on], with a message on the back, asking them to, B.Y.O. The world is looking on, and after the Stadium farce, they were indeed laughing! Please don’t let this be “Out Loud” when they arrive at our place. Perception is reality, and if this media chatter continues, our butt will further ascend into “joking” prominence, with such being butt ugly, and not a good look and vibe, as time continues to draw near.
Let’s not just win on the field, let’s pick up the ball off the field and also run with it, making this more than an 80 minute spectacle, but a momentousness event worthy of a # and a “trending topic” on Twitter!
Wisdom has historically stated that, where there is no vision, the people perish, and sadly in such a scenario, any good ideas perish with it! I think we can safely say that we may be asking too much to ask for “vision” in the ARC, however, can we at least get some sanity, and while they’re at it, even a little unity! We the fans, would really appreciate it!
Therefore, to help encourage this reality, and after the success of “Paul the Octopus” in making the right decisions in the 2010 Fifa World Cup, with Spain being the most recent, it might be time for a change in the Auckland Regional Council!
All in favour… Raise Your Tentacles!
Until Next Time
