Global Warming as Religion?!

2 December 2009 No Comment

The recent email discoveries, popularly referred to as “Climategate” has promoted much discussion in the blogosphere, and as it relates to this blogger’s area of interest, to the broadly defined “Christian” subsection.

Blogs such as The Beretta Blog, with “the Glenn of the Peoples,” MandM, with “Hew” Flanagan, and a number of posts at NZ Conservative, with the “Big Kitties” recent contribution of Science vs. Religion, have all added to the present narrative on the kiwi blogosphere, which if the commenting affirms anything, this is one subject where opinions do not suffer blog-fright!

To add to the “melting” pot of mind, not earth-warming reflections, I am Jonny King is passing onto you the reader, a speech by the late Michael Crichton that he gave on the subject of… Environmentalism as Religion, which, he contextualises with global warming, among other topics.

As a brief introduction on his site affirms…

This was not the first discussion of environmentalism as a religion, but it caught on and was widely quoted. Michael explains why religious approaches to the environment are inappropriate and cause damage to the natural world they intend to protect.

Here is a little context…

Today, one of the most powerful religions in the Western World is environmentalism. Environmentalism seems to be the religion of choice for urban atheists. Why do I say it’s a religion? Well, just look at the beliefs. If you look carefully, you see that environmentalism is in fact a perfect 21st century remapping of traditional Judeo-Christian beliefs and myths.

Now that is a comment that could warm a city… but is it correct?

Just before this turns some readers anywhere from Green to Red, Crichton earlier in the piece affirms the following…

… I want it perfectly clear that I believe it is incumbent on us to conduct our lives in a way that takes into account all the consequences of our actions, including the consequences to other people, and the consequences to the environment. I believe it is important to act in ways that are sympathetic to the environment, and I believe this will always be a need, carrying into the future.

Sadly, on the of subject of a changing climate, to dis-believe the basis for global warming is taken as an affirmation against being environmentally responsible.  Such a straw man is surely a tactic to silence dissent!

While I don’t agree with Crichton’s straight facts vs. faith dichotomy in the context of “religion,” as it relates to environmentalism, which you will have to read about for yourself, it is an interesting perspective that is worth your consideration, particularly as the science is proving to be a disobedient child to settle!

You may find his other examples interesting to say the least!

If you are a regular follower of the global warming debate across the blogosphere, you will have seen this article referred to on a number of occasions, as it proved to be somewhat catalytic!

HERE IT IS!

Until Next Time

I am Jonny King
