Cue the clip from 1min 39sec for those who just want this vision.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

An example of why he still sends shivers down many a-spine.

Post this annual celebration, the introduction of the Sevens circuit has encouraged a greater focus in this abridged form, and with the gathering of Sevens as an Olympic event in 2016, there will come a time when the ‘majority’ of Unions devote more resources to meet this need.

New Zealand has long used this form as a feeder for the Fifteens, where the young and gifted are given an experience both in the need for a professional approach under Tiejtens, while also gaining a taste at an international level.

Recently in sporting discussions, iamjonnyking has reflected on the impact this growing Sevens evolution could possibly have on a rugby culture. As you do, when talking shop, discussions have navigated on how unions would move to meet this growing need; how competitions could possibly grow to foster this talent, and how/where player specialisation is likely to grow.

Today, this subject has been broached in the context of some words from the master coach, Gordon Tiejtens, as New Zealand gears up for the Wellington celebration on the world calendar.

Take a read:

Agreed.

Sevens is starting to grow a life of its own.

It still has some way to develop, but as this context grows, so do the requirements and their impact, thereof.

Tiejtens has underscored the physical impact on the body as a limitation, but I would also want to think how the nature of this code will impact on the body requirements, and therefore, limitations of this sport. While Fifteens does not have a one size fits all philosophy, Sevens is much closer in philosophy to Rugby League in this area, where player size is not so related to position, but the overall dynamics of the code.

On the other hand, this assumes a future development consistent with the past.

As Sevens has morphed out of Fifteens, it has generally looked for the best in this code that can handle the demands of a more physically expansive approach. With a greater focus on Sevens, so will follow the science, philosophy, and selection toward what one wants in a player.

Will this become more ideal, therefore more specialised, and so distinctive?

Union will likely follow the leader in this regard, and allow the stage to set the context. If Sevens continues to grow toward 2016 and marks those moments, she could find her distinctive personality, even as the Test version of cricket eventually let the pyjama have her own parade.

Could Sevens ever rival Fifteens for a worldwide appeal?

I think this should be the subject of my next post.

What Say You?

The way forward for Sevens?

Until Next Time

iamjonnyking

Quote

Tottenham: Nelsen on the end of a Hotspur Premier Transfer Line

world sport

All Whites

Blackburn Rovers

English Premier League

Football

Ryan Nelsen

Soccer

Tottenham Hotspur

All the details have been well truly delivered on the deadline.

Ryan Nelsen, the man who would lead the All Whites in South Africa in 2010, has taken the white to heart, falling on his feet, at the Premier League challengers with a free transfer overnight.

If that reads alot like good fortune, it is also the fruit of long fostered admiration for the character shown by this leader of the All Whites pack, in the Twilight of his career.

Thirty-Four years is not normative to make your career move in this sporting context, but the longtime Blackburn Rovers leader …

Thirty-Four years is not normative to make your career move in this sporting context, but the longtime Blackburn Rovers leader is making the most of this offering to a “glamour” club.

At the Shakespearean Rugby Club we are “stoked” for the man who has epitomized what you hope to experience in your leader – tough, gutsy, and even inspirational. I want the rush, the emotion, the adrenalin surge that is axiomatic when intuitively I know I am communicating something that not only speaks, resonates, reverberates, but regenerates.

When sport fundamentally affects you, you will exemplify this with your effect toward others. This is what I mean by, regenerates.

Fundamentally, when I write it is an outworking of who I am. The distinctiveness of the style may affirm this is so, but just as I write to satisfy personally, there is also the desire that this would impact others.

I long to write prose that invites the reader on a journey that drags all along for the ride; that doesn’t need a let off time, as those reading are complicit in the crime.

When I write I long to be intoxicated by a symphony of words that are resonating and ruminating through my existence, refusing to allow their silence to be consent until I am taken captive, captivated toward a discourse where I am free to unburden my soul from within.

I long to write like this everyday. More than that, I want the journey filled with an evocative experience of living that creates an aroma of new life at every turn.

Ideal so often just dropped off as an ism.

This piece, like our own sporting pursuits, can easily fall off the page – and we taste the bitter soil of defeat.

Now that I gathered my prose together, it is your turn; what sportingly moves you? What causes you to shut your eyes, play with your hair, swing your arms in adrenalin-inducing mayhem, as you recount the details.

You know when I am excited, and it happens regularly, because I will become even more animated, the volume will rise, and you will need a bus to inhibit this flow.

When you think about this sporting year that is really about to begin, what creates this effect?

Just as I long to write words each day that invigorate my soul and engender an appropriate response; sportingly, we opine for those moments that call us to attention, and leave us breathless.

This is the first day of the first month in a rugby year of 2012.

We-that-is-me at the Shakespearean Rugby Club long to experience a year where we are captured by a sporting contest that will move this writer’s machinations, even into different mediums, with the result that all will come looking for more, staying for a while, and become passionate about what could possibly happen next.

Infamous Alive:Dead Famous

What Say You?

Until Next Time

iamjonnyking

CLYDE RATHBONE: Assaulted by the Black Dog; Lives to Tell his Tale

rugby union

Brumbies

Canberra

Clyde Rathbone

Depression

John Kirwan

Rugby

South Africa

Wallabies

Depression. A subject as misunderstood as it is silenced in sport. In a context where only the strong survive, a visible breaking point is perceived as weakness, which must be denied, repressed, and rejected.

The result is that silence is very often viewed as the only safe option.

In New Zealand, the iconic All Blacks wing – JK – John Kirwan, would speak up about his own struggles and way forward.

Today, in my searching, I came across some very recent words from South African U21 Captain-to-Australian Wallaby, Clyde Rathbone – note the images as well.

As I have read and reflected, I must admit to a perplexing sense. To be sure, his honesty about his situation; his willingness to offer up his journey, and his desire to send them around the world remain noble intentions. Life is not a neatly photoshopped series of images that we perfect after the fact. Sportspeople, entrusted with so much, by so many, need to continually refute the dream, providing a naked reality to their journey.

However, it’s the sense and purpose one reads in the final paragraph that provides the insight into a still desperate man:

And I need your help. I need this story broadcast, I need everyone I know and everyone I don’t to read this. I need that for me but mostly I just need to tell my wife that I love her and that I’m sorry, and that anything she chooses to do for her happiness is the right decision. I need her to know that she should never settle for happier than she’s been in 10 years when what she deserves is happier than she ever imagined you could be.

So what I’m asking is that you post this on your blog, send it to anyone you can, comment on it or don’t. I just need it out there…

Thank you,

Clyde Rathbone”

Yes, the black dog – a euphemism for depression in New Zealand – may have been defeated, but Rathbone reads like a man willing to go to the ends of the earth for his, love actually. It as if this may prove enough of a message in a bottle, for her to respond, and so underscores the motivation.

You can read the full account of his words – HERE – with another article on his account – HERE.

What Say You?

Until Next Time

iamjonnyking

H/T H/T

Source

SUPERUGBY: Springbok Answer in 9?

rugby union

Bulls

Charl Mcleod

Fourie du Preez

Halfback

Jano Vermaak

Michael Claasens

Rory Kockett

Ruan Pienaar

Sarel Pretorius

Scrumhalf

Springboks

Suntory Goliath

SupeRugby

On the 24th March, 2012, Fourie du Preez, turns 30 years young.

Young.

Another, who last held the Webb Ellis for ransom also turned 30 on the last day of 2011. He has signed on for 4 more years, body willing, in All Black. All of that is to say that this question should not be construed as being cast in light of the previous owner’s official demise.

In fact, Meyer has provided indication that locale has no limitation for a Springbok heart, meaning the Bullet in the Bulls and Springbok gun that nows calls the Suntory Goliath’s, his rugby home in the land of the rising sun, can potentially still be part of the Springbok future.

Is this realistic?

While there are examples of players, such as Peter Grant and even, Tony “Fathertime” Brown, coming back to Super level rugby in 2011 from some playing time in Japan, it would be asking much of the cherished fixture in 9, post the injury period that took away his cutting edge, evident in the Springboks season of 2011.

However, there is talk.

Justifiably referenced as the number one, halfback [scrumhalf] in “his” day, his decision to move away from South Africa is potentially providing one serious question that this year’s SupeRugby should practically answer.

Who is the next General in 9?

This situation has come to ahead, in my head, in light of a very recent piece where iamjonnyking discussed some words from the new King in South Africa, Heyneke Meyer.

The locus of these words related to the importance of decision-making in how his Springboks would play their game. Given this reality; his history with the Bulls; his gameplan that activated the 9 as dominant, and you have a situation asking for a player… Or, equally as interesting, is the time ripe for a change in the plan?

Given Meyer’s insistence, one can consider any number of names, even those plying their trade outside of the Republic – du Preez, Pienaar, Pretorius, Kockett, Claasens. However, talent will defeat some, while opportunity others. The name that is likely to lead in discussion is, Francois Hougaard. There is no doubting his physical gifts that can be exhibited even out on the flank – wing. The question still remains to be answered as to whether he has the tactical nous to match his physical frame. The boy needs time in the holster. Will he even have a full season in 9, with Jano Vermaak, now very much full of Bull?!

Charl Macleod was also in the mix in 2011, but his horizon does not appear looming as the next best thing.

Change?

When one considers the talk of the talent coming through in South African rugby, there are multiple noises about those wearing the number 10. Lambie was talked about as the next big thing, and while he has proven more than capable in 15, the talk now rests atop of the Grey Goose. To be sure, other names are also given a fair hearing, underscoring a potential resurgence of the dominant South African, 10.

Nevertheless, while this all remains very premature, as most are still starting their next phase at a Super level, is South Africa now on the cusp of a return to the glory days of Northern Transvaal rugby?

Naasty.

Hmmm; questions, questions, questions.

Maybe you can provide some answers.

Who is the South African man to wear the number 9?

Some inside perspectives!

What about this 10?

Again, inside this potential rise!

What Say You?

Until Next Time

iamjonnyking

Source Source

SPRINGBOKS: Heyneke Meyer provides a Taste of His Thing to Come

rugby union

Fourie du Preez

Heyneke Meyer

Pieter de Villiers

Rugby

SARU

Springboks

SupeRugby

Just like that, the Divvy was no more, as his coaching gig in charge of the Springboks was now very much part of history.

It had taken some time for SARU to finally nail down another man, with the process providing potential for the ridiculous; instead, as many have noted following, “the solution” has offered more of the sublime, speaking words that have resonated with the rugby fraternity in the Republic. Celebration – time to crack open a Heineken, Meyer! #Nickname

For those outside the Republic, this reality is likely to have taken a discourse in the digital form of inscribed words.

Not anymore.

For your viewing pleasure, the SARU Press Conference Announcing Their New Man

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

And; an Interview, where the man talks some more – amazing

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Thoughts?

iamjonnyking has a couple.

[1] It is interesting that Meyer talks about trying to promote a common philosophy of rugby style in the South African SupeRugby franchises. Given that each franchise will have this locked and loaded for the coming year, this desire could stay in the world of ideas. I am assuming he locates these words in the initial stages of his coaching regime, as he beds down his gameplan with a new group, with little time together.

If this is a long-term goal, one has to consider the wisdom in such a decision. If rugby is in a state of continual development, nailing down a style that has a monolithic outworking in its construction and out on the field, does not engender the type of innovation needed, not only at different levels of rugby, but particularly at the top. It also requires a rather convoluted & regimented approach that negates a dynamic element, particularly important at this International level.

I have noted some talk about “Bulls” rugby, and if I was a betting man, this type of approach is likely the foundation to the future of Springbok rugby. This is not necessarily a negative, as for all the talk about innovation, it is not a matter of redefining the wheel on the chariot, but maximising the shape and base this provides. The building blocks to a successful gameplan in rugby prove relatively simple. Simple, and unlikely to experience, Rocket Science.

In the Republic, this means forwards winning the collision in a most confrontational and combative manner. This fits the South African mentality, providing a base for dominance, which can then be extrapolated through the backs. Therefore, Meyer may not be asking too much of a certain franchise, but much more of a handful of others.

[2] There are two types of rugby; losing rugby and winning rugby. There is little surprise that Meyer prefers the latter. While that is perfunctory, the point of these words is akin to smelling salts for the man. These are supposed to awaken the senses to reality, rugby reality. They highlight the pragmatist – he would likely use, realist – that affirms the end must be outfitted by the appropriate means to affect the effect.

Idealism is for those All Blacks of 2007 who thought a drop-kick was something to be jettisoned.

Just in case you are confused, Meyer does provide some reference points. He wants “players able to play the situation,” which, interestingly, is style exclusive. He does ground this in the example of when to run the ball out of defence, but what Meyer is really calling for is a type or character of player – decision-makers. Substance over style!

There is also a focus on the process.

With Fourie du Preez now finishing in Japan – assuming, of course – the question about a general in 9 becomes all the more significant, particularly in light of the man in charge. While FDP struggled post his return after injury, he arose to prominence as the fulcrum in a Bulls team that won through dominance and his decision-making, with Meyer very much part of making this a reality, highlighted by the Super success in 2007.

While this call for decision-makers will be significant throughout, the question of the right man for halfback, come scrum-half, will be one of the important questions for this new Springbok coaching set-up to answer through the period we know as, Supe Rugby. This needs a total change of policy for the Six Nations. England must go to Murrayfield and stick it to the opposition. They have to smash the Scottish forwards past the ball instead of conservatively stopping at the tackled player in order to secure possession.

We want quick ball in New Zealand and so we concentrate on dominating the space beyond the ball carrier. We want our supporting players to get under the opposition and to move them backwards. We flood past the ball to create good possession for our strike runners.

At national level and at club level English teams are far too worried about securing possession. They are obsessed with sealing off the ball carrier. The English teams are paranoid that an opponent might steal the ball and so everyone jams on the brakes and seals off possession. It is fearful and often illegal.

Now for some more of this loquaciousness.

A country with over a million players should be the best team in the world and England’s potential in the backs is as good as it has ever been.

Food for Thought.

Another.

It sometimes seems that England are World Champions at wasting talent.

Ouch. That’ll leave a mark.

His Conclusion

The England winning World Cup team had players like Martin Johnson and Richard Hill who were expert at cleaning out opponents beyond the ball. What has happened since? England and the English clubs play a game based on fear and a generation of promising backs are dying on their feet.

That has to change.

It is amazing what a Rugby World cup win will do for you, and for your words, as most will sit up, take notice, and even follow Headmaster Henry’s suit.

Having watched the English live at Eden Park in 2011, their backline play was as lateral as it was slow in the getting underway process. The problem for the English has in the past, been much very part of their solution, with the man in 10. I would tweet at the time of the Quarter-Final versus France that Johnson needed to remove Wilkinson before it became too late. We all know what didn’t happen next. While Flood has no messianic rugby pretensions, the difference in the formation and flow of the backline when he was moved into the pivot, was demonstrative, and on the scoreboard.

Quality First-Five Eighths do not just appear, even out of middle earth, but for English to find any movement, momentum, and even mojo in the backline exhibiting an effect; yes, they need the prerequisite ball to use – cue Henry’s words. However, they also need to find their next generation in 10 – post the Jonny Wilkinson – period; not only practically, but also conceptually.

The English are haunted by a Ghost.

The image of the man in 2003 must be remembered and celebrated, while at the same time, removed from the deified position that it has held until that night in Auckland when that examination should have exhumed it from the lofty ideals it has held since Sydney, 2003.

These words should not be construed as any type of attack on the Jonny Wilkinson legacy. It is, however, a call for the English to do away with the icon that has beholden their ideas of the pivot for far too long.

England now have an opportunity to be bold. I would start with the selection. With the obvious man injured, Toby Flood, an important question remains unanswered in practice. Is Flood the man to lead the English expanse into the future? At 26 years of age, he has time, even talent, but temperament? Time will be telling.

Therefore, in this Six Nations, I would start with someone new.

Recent talk that has made its way south is the whisper of using Charlie Hodgson in 10. However, this looks too much like a continuation of the past, where the old dog was taught a new trick.

The problem?

Still the old dog!

I have only had a brief viewing of Owen Farrell, and while very young, he has exhibited the metal required of the one with the pressure painted on his back in 10. To be sure, much of his recent rugby has been with a number outside attached, but with rugby now firmly fixed into a four year cycle, this is the time to test and immerse, so that development can take place.

England at Scotland, for the Calcutta Cup, while a traditional challenge is no more than one would want. It is time for the Rose to bare its thorns.

Yes, mentor away if you must – and that is the talk from up north – but come 2015 in the good old dart, Charlie Hodgson will be nearly 35 – just in his English prime. I am reminded as I type of words of John Mitchell post that 2003 Rugby World Cup in the context of Carlos Spencer, who had proved more theory than practice, with Mitchell affirming Dan Carter as the man with the talent in 10.

Famous last words.

What Say You?

Until Next Time

iamjonnyking

H/T Source

Source Quotes

EQUALITY: Does Tennis Pay for Its Play?

world sport

Australian Open Final

Equal Pay in Tennis?

Men's v Women's

Tennis

When the rewards for winning in a Grand Slam become the ground for a battle of the sexes, any debate on – prize money to play – gets lost in a PC world.

Fortune favours the brave, and you are, as now that I am Mac, I won’t go back, meaning we can examine any possible rationale behind such a decision.

The opening line, as always, has much importance in a piece of writing, with that opening salvo, conceptual for many to justify the present situation of equal pay. Take a look at this table of prize money at Wimbledon from 1968-2011.

The difference in figures, while initially proportionately significant, have progressively moved closer in proximity.

It would be in the next century where they would find a common home.

2007 would be the year where Wimbledon decided on an equal pay for play, with this situation likely to remain the status quo. Many will affirm, so let it be!

This is a man’s world, and this historic pay distinction just proves it.

Therefore, if this debate is reared in the larger narrative of a movement toward emasculating the male cultural domain, thereby encouraging a greater female expression, this small step for Tennis can be viewed as a somewhat larger leap for womenkind.

This perspective may work for some, providing justification, but does it reason an appropriate basis for this Tennis reality? Could it, in fact, complete what it attempts to deny, by forcing such a solution. After all, if this debate was gender neutral, would we have any?

While it may be true that a legitimate push to challenge many cultural assumptions in the male/female debate, has had the flow-on effect of negating reasoned and vigorous debate where there should inequality; this does not mean a sufficient basis can not be sought.

Nevertheless, I am still getting over being unable to conceive.

We are about to cross this great divide. However, before we examine some affirmations, the encouragement for this discussion has been the just completed Australian Tennis Open, where the intensity and length of the Men’s Final placed the Women’s in an uncomfortable juxtaposition, with the context of such comments flowing forth in social media.

The following numbers have encouraged many to ask why.

Those who find the above situation, a PR joke gone wrong will generally use the, pay for play, argument as means to point out the bleeding obvious.

Given the contrasting requirements of play for the men and the women, it seems absurd to expect both to receive equal toil for their labour. Take this Final again, for example; while hardly normative, when a contest is mandated to be the best of 5 sets, time on court will, with few exceptions, exceed those that battle out the best of three. Given the relative strengths and depth of talent in either side of this question, the argument for a simple, pay them for what they play, is further strengthened, with a veneer that initially seems impenetrable.

However, there are other ways of determining worth.

Take this medium you are presently undertaking; there are hundreds of thousands of sites that have the same basic purpose; many lie undetected awaiting some significant interaction for all their words. Time and effort is on a similar plane with those that have cultural resonance, but the destination is far from popular. In other words, for the equality in their effort, the impact and the reward is a world apart.

While this scribe does not have any numbers to substantiate the popularity of women’s tennis vis-a-vis men’s tennis, a very shaky and social example can be the noise that arose around Twitter when both of these Finals took place over the weekend. While the women’s final encouraged a reasonable amount of comment, as much was made of the noise coming out of center court; this was stark as it was pale when compared with the noise and chatter of the men’s.

The women’s game may be popular for its aesthetics, but, it is the athleticism inherent in the men’s contest that seems more popular for the fans, and more likely to garner support. This is not to say that women’s Tennis does not have these realities, but it is to say that on a comparative level, the men’s exceeds. Fair assessment?

A much warmer and fuzzier basis for this equal pay position is that the comparative level of competition, which is the highest in the context of Tennis, provides the reason to offer pay parity. This also shifts the argument away from the, pay for play position, as it has little to do with the content per se, but the acquired status that this sporting endeavour has gained.

Marketing and PR departments complete such a transaction with a Brand, every day. A pair of the “just do its” is inherently not worth the inflated price that many pay. Therefore, offering an equal pay scale is about communicating the elite nature of this sporting occasion. Again, one could even argue that as this is the same elite level, without the male apendage, equality equating to standard makes synonymous rewards the right way to play.

I will hasten away from any other altruistic assertions for the above pay scale, as any, demand an analysis of the worldview, and seem a little too close to the Salvos.

Where do you Grunt?

Objectivity is the destination of a relentless search. This means that the question considered is so much more than just a multi-choice. It seems larger narratives lurk in the assumptions, which push individuals to conflicting positions. While this scribe has affirmed differing bases for a common pay scale, when the search is completed with eyes wide shut, it would seem that this post is much more ado about that first line.

We live in a cultural context that assumes a democratic and fair approach to life. Women rightfully look into the past and find fault. Today, many more males, it must be admitted, with a sporting obsession, look at the Tennis rewards and say that this is in fact, now a double.

15-0.

To Whom?

What Say You?

Until Next Time

iamjonnyking

Image Image

SPORTING HEADLINE –
