I am Jonny King spoke these words by Matt Chandler to his wife, who was suitably impacted by these thoughtful words!
One can say that they reflect someone who understands and has experienced the vicissitudes of life, which also highlight a present purpose in our suffering, and the direction with which these shadows and valley’s encourage us to pursue, in the living of our lives.
Here are the words, and as you reflect on these, do so in the context in which they are spoken, and ask yourself what this means for the various contexts of your existence in the practice of life…
From his Twitter account of all places…
One of our sinful realities is that like Adam and Eve, we like to assert our own self-sufficiency, and in doing so we reject the Lordship and revealed will of our Creator over and through our existence, thinking and acting like we know better, and failing to learn from history, we too readily repeat it… Fools in our thinking that eats away into our practice!
The antithesis of our self-sufficiency can be exemplified in the practice of prayer. To truly prayer we must come to the realisation that in our assertions, longings, and language, that we are saying and affirming that help is needed from a source outside of ourselves, that we are incapable of truly meeting our own needs, that we are insufficient to supply the multiplicity of answers to the issues that we face each day, and very often, it is only coming to the end of ourselves, of our own sufficiency, that we realise that our sufficiency is in Christ!
Too often we are too sinfully stupid to see this, let alone act upon this, which is where suffering is a means of the grace of God in our lives, as suffering says, you can’t fix this, you can’t put this right, this one is out of your hands, this is bigger than you, and the illusion of our control over and in our lives is gloriously ruptured, and maybe for the first time, we see how pathetic we are, how porous we are at keeping the pounding without our existence, and how tenuous this life is that we live under the Sun!
Such is a glorious time, because at this moment, at that moment, when the end of ourselves is in full and living viewing, we practically see that such was never meant to be that way, that our life is hid in Christ, that His strength is made perfect in our weakness, and His glory is put on display when His lights are on the stage of our lives, and we have left the building, our candle has been snuffed out, and our struggle is over. At such times our illusion of control has been made null and void, and we are ready to pray like never before!
Then our prayers become what they always should have been… ALIVE!
Until Next Time
